HIGH PRECISION, ZERO BACKLASH, AND TORSIONALLY STIFF: METAL BELLOWS COUPLINGS FROM R+W

High precision bellows couplings are used wherever positional accuracy and dynamic motion are in demand. This can be in medical devices, test stands, wind power turbines, servo axes in machine tools, wood processing machinery, packaging machinery and many more high performance equipment types. As a leading provider, R+W is constantly working to expand its product portfolio of metal bellows couplings for various applications in every size and design.

MODE OF OPERATION: METAL BELLOWS COUPLINGS

Bellows couplings are especially suitable for direct connection between two coaxial shafts. The metal bellows defines the characteristics of the coupling and compensates lateral, axial and angular shaft misalignment with low restoring forces. Backlash-free, torsionally rigid metal bellows guarantee precise positioning of the driven load, and can be used in highly dynamic cyclic duty applications, as well as at extremely high rotational speeds - up to 200,000 rpm depending on the model.

FOR SMOOTH RUNNING: ELASTOMER COUPLINGS FROM R+W

The main advantages of elastomer couplings include vibration damping, easy installation, zero backlash transmission, and electrical isolation. Whether for machine tools, packaging machines, automation systems, printing machines or general mechanical engineering - the uses for elastomer couplings are as diverse as their requirements.

ELASTOMER COUPLINGS - DEFINITION, FUNCTION AND PROPERTIES

Elastomer couplings are part of a wider group, known as jaw couplings, the key component of which is an elastomer segment inserted between two hub halves. This elastomer insert is the heart of the elastomer coupling. It transmits torques from 0.5 to 25,000 Nm without backlash, and compensates for axial, lateral and angular shaft misalignment. When properly selected for size and hardness, the elastomer insert optimizes the entire drive train and exhibits important characteristics, such as vibration damping, torsional stiffness and thermal stability. Electrical conductivity is also an important feature of the special ATEX certified version, providing a path to ground for any electrostatic charges, and eliminating the potential for sparking when used in hazardous environments. Preloading of the elastomer insert ensures backlash free transmission, and the precision machining of the two hubs with curved drive jaws guarantees concentricity for smooth running. The damping ability of elastomer couplings can have an especially positive effect on the service life of adjacent equipment, especially in case of vibration, shock loading and dynamic motion.

SIMPLER, FASTER AND MORE EFFICIENT: LINE SHAFTS FROM R+W

Precision line shaft couplings (also referred to as link shafts and connecting shafts) are used for spanning larger distances between mechanical components. In the past, running shafting across greater lengths required support bearings to prevent the shaft from whipping during rotation. Modern line shafts are available in length of up to six meters without any intermediate support required. Their areas of application are widely diversified: including screw jack lift systems, overhead gantries, conveyors, and in the mechanical synchronization of belt driven linear actuators.

LINE SHAFTS - STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION

Line shafts are much like precision couplings in their structure, in that the main elements are end hubs of varying designs and flexible joints consisting of metal bellows or elastomer inserts. They also include a cut-to-length, high precision intermediate tube made of aluminium, steel or CFRP (carbon fiber) to provide the spacing. By eliminating time consuming alignment of intermediate support bearings, line shafts save the machine builder time and the cost of additional components. Line shafts from R+W are completely free of backlash and can be used in temperatures ranging from -30° C to + 100° C.

FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TORQUE OVERLOAD: SAFETY COUPLINGS FROM R+W

Machine torque overloads can have many different causes. Regardless of the cause, R+W safety couplings provide a fast, reliable disconnect between driving and driven components in the event of a torque spike in excess of a pre-set level, helping to prevent damage and downtime.

THE TECHNICAL BASIS: THE BALL-DETENT PRINCIPLE OF R+W SAFETY COUPLINGS

R+W safety couplings operate on the spring-loaded ball-detent principle and serve as overload breakaway devices. They provide rigid, zero-backlash transmission during normal operation, and if the application torque exceeds a pre-set limit, the balls disengage from their detents to disconnect the driveline.
